The material presented here is part of the "Zwischendurch mal…" series from Hueber Verlag, which includes songs, poems, and soon, games. The title reflects the series' mission: to liven up German as a Foreign Language lessons, make them more engaging, and have fun.

The 45 texts on German culture and society are organized into thematic groups that reflect social, economic, political, and cultural life in the Federal Republic of Germany. However, the cultural aspect, with only one topic—the media—is somewhat underrepresented.

Each text is illustrated with photographs that serve as pre-reading material and also provide initial opportunities for speaking on the topic. Each topic is followed by three further writing and speaking exercises on a double-page spread. The vocabulary related to the topic is displayed on the second page. The answer key for each exercise can be found at the end of the material.

It is quite conceivable that some of these texts could also be used in orientation courses.
